Amnesty's vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights treaties. In pursuit of this vision, Amnesty's mission is to undertake action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of civil and political rights: those abuses which endanger physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights. As the Claremont Colleges Chapter of Amnesty International, we support the goals and vision of Amnesty. We hope to expose human rights abuses and spread awareness of these issues on the five campuses through forums, discussions, informational exhibits, film festivals, and lectures. We also participate in the international letter-writing movement, which supports victims of human rights abuses by writing letters of appeal to perpetrators of human rights abuses and letters of support to their victims. In addition, Amnesty is proud to participate in joint activism with all other human rights groups on the Claremont Colleges. Although Amnesty International as formal global institution fights works primarily toward protecting civil and political rights, we at the Claremont Colleges are also actively working to spread awareness of and protect social, cultural, and economic rights: those rights to water, food, work, education, health care, and housing.a Paige Fraser ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. We seek to provide programming that covers a variety of functions and Jewish identities. To us, this means programming that is: Culturally Jewish - Whether it be programming about Ashkenazi Jewish life in Europe and the United States, a Sephardic and/or Mizrachi Lunch and Learn, or a presentation of Jewish life in a variety of cultures and contexts; including our own. Israel-Oriented – We seek to provide opportunities to learn about and discuss the situation in Israel. We strive to provide an open environment in which a variety of attitudes toward Israel are talked about and accepted. Religious – We seek to provide student lead services and appropriate religious activities during the school year. It is our hope that the majority of religious Jewish students in the Claremont Colleges will find a new home in our community and with the support of our Chaplaincy. Social – We seek to provide opportunities for Jewish students to socialize with each other regardless of their background of how they come to identify as Jewish. We seek to provide social programs that are purely social, where Jewish students come to be “just Jewish” with other students. Social Justice – Whether the students come to social justice through the religious mandate or for personal reasons, we seek to provide opportunities for students to engage in tikkun olam, repairing the world. Community Outreach – We seek to reach out to other local Jewish and non-Jewish organizations in order to put the student community out into the world and to bring the world into the student community. We believe that students too easily get drawn into life at the colleges and forget about the community surrounding us. We seek to resist that tendency by bringing others in. Hillel Knesset strives to provide a welcoming home for every Jewish student in Claremont regardless of what his or her Jewish background might be. Because of this, we are obligated both by ourselves and b Hillel International to provide a variety of opportunities, all of which are non-alcoholic. The Club participates in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association, the club equivalent of the NCAA. The team currently plays in the Western Collegiate League ""A"" division. Located in the Los Angeles region, the team's league opponents are Chapman University, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, the University of Southern California, and Loyola Marymount University. In addition, the team must schedule games against opponents from across the country, including (in recent years) the University of California at Berkeley, Boston College, and the University of Utah. Competing at a very high level for a club, the team last won the WCLL divisional ""B"" championship in 2003. The team also went to the ""B"" national tournament in 2006, and qualified for the ""A"" playoffs in 2007, their first year in the higher league. This season the Cougars are ranked 23rd nationally with a record of 11-2 within the MCLA. The Cougars’ goals for the upcoming season are to win the national tournament and to achieve greater participation within the 5C’s. In addition the Cougars hope to help spread the popularity of the great sport of lacrosse. The student-run Club welcomes new players, who are introduced to the increasingly popular sport, as well as helps established players continue their love for the game. The elected team captains and presidents are responsible for managing the operations of the Club, including coaching and/or retaining a professional coach, scheduling practices and games, organizing road trips, maintaining equipment, and fundraising. The team must raise significant funds every year in order to participate successfully in the MCLA. In addition to the generous donations, each member of the Cougars is required to pay $850 in dues. In addition to bringing people from different colleges together, SKEEZE grants students the opportunity to escape campus and provides a way to experience our fantastic natural surroundings. The purpose of the club is to facilitate student-run ski and snowboard trips and to cultivate enthusiasm and interest in these sports among the Claremont Colleges student body. Our goal is to match the interest in skiing and snowboarding on the 5-C campus with an assortment of well-organized, well-researched, and efficient ski and snowboarding trips, as well as similarly managed social and educational events. We recognize skiing and snowboarding as exceptionally enjoyable and healthy activities in which all should have the option to partake. We also recognize that skiing and snowboarding are financially taxing and somewhat technical sports. Unfortunately, this often prevents the average college student from fully enjoy these rewarding activities. We, as a club, uniquely exist to circumvent these problems by providing monetary support for trips and arranging member discounts. Last year was a banner year for SKEEZE. Not only did our club membership grow to its highest level ever, but we began establishing long-term relationships with local business and ski areas. Building off these relationships, next year we intend to establish programs that will provide our members with discount lessons and learn-to-ski packages for a fraction of their official cost. We expect our membership to increase with these programs, and the number of student-led trips to grow with it. The Claremont Colleges Ski Club has the unequivocal mission to fully facilitate students – both well-funded and under-funded – in learning and enjoying the sports of skiing and snowboarding in every way possible. Students for Bernard Field Station Amy Callahan ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. One of our principal motivations for saving this natural and endangered Claremont habitat is our belief that the BFS struggle is a micro-level analogy for extensive widespread degradation of the environment throughout the US and the world. SBFS is therefore a group determined to stop the destruction of a natural habitat by what we believe to be extraneous development. We furthermore believe that the structure of CUC is not conducive to healthy student input on issues such as the BFS. It is therefore our mission to network with environmental groups, students, and faculty across the 7Cs so that the BFS will be respected as a valuable academic and ecological resource for decades to come. From its small beginnings, Under the Lights has become one of the most highly-respected and active organizations on campus. The basic components of UTL’s mission are as follows: 1) To provide high-quality, low-stress theater for everyone interested. UTL maintain a balance between high-quality shows and not asking for an unreasonable time commitment from its members. 2) To create an inclusive theater community that encourages participation. Tryouts are casual, and all that is really needed for involvement with UTL is the desire to be on stage and the willingness to have fun. 3) To produce top-quality plays for the CMC community. United Students Against Sweatshops Elizabeth Lipschultz ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. We define 'sweatshop' broadly and recognize that it is not limited to the apparel industry, but everywhere among us. We believe that university standards should be brought in line with those of its students who demand that their school's logo is emblazoned on clothing made in decent working conditions. We have fought for these beliefs by demanding that our universities adopt ethically and legally strong codes of conduct, full public disclosure of company information and truly independent verification systems to ensure that sweatshop conditions are not happening. Ultimately, we are using our power as students to affect the larger industry that thrives in secrecy, exploitation, and the power relations of a flawed system.
